Las Vegas, April 3, 2025—The UHD Alliance (UHDA) and the Ultra HD Forum have entered discussions regarding a potential merger. This strategic move aims to unify efforts to advance Ultra HD, HDR, and the next-generation entertainment experience for consumers and the industry.

Strategic Benefits of a Merger

“A unified organization would bring significant advantages to both consumers and industry stakeholders by strengthening the voice of Ultra HD advocacy, streamlining industry efforts, and enhancing the overall viewing experience,” noted UHDA president Bill Baggelaar. “By combining the UHD Alliance’s consumer-focused initiatives with the Ultra HD Forum’s technical expertise, the merged entity would serve as a more powerful advocate for the adoption and advancement of Ultra HD technologies.”

Consolidating resources would lead to clearer, more consistent guidance for content creators, distributors, and device manufacturers, ensuring a more efficient and aligned approach to Ultra HD production and distribution. Ultimately, this integration would benefit consumers by delivering a more seamless, high-quality Ultra HD experience across all platforms and devices, ensuring that content consistently meets its full potential.

Why Now? A Decade of Innovation

As the volume of content designed primarily for home viewing continues to grow—often exclusively available for in-home consumption—ensuring seamless interoperability and preserving creative intent have become increasingly vital for consumers. This shift highlights the importance of delivering a consistent, high-quality viewing experience across devices and platforms. In 2025, as both the UHDA and Ultra HD Forum celebrate their 10-year anniversaries, they mark a decade of leadership in Ultra HD technology, industry standards, and enhancing consumer experiences, reinforcing their commitment to innovation and excellence in home entertainment.

“As Ultra HD has matured, new challenges and opportunities have emerged, including evolving HDR mastering standards, high frame rates, advanced audio, and new content distribution models,” added UHD Forum president, Dr. Yasser Syed. “This rapidly changing landscape calls for greater collaboration and a unified approach to ensure continued industry innovation and consumer benefits.”

Ongoing Collaboration & Joint Initiatives

The UHDA and Ultra HD Forum have each considered developing recommendations for updating  HDR mastering specifications. Collaboration on this effort could lay the groundwork for a more cohesive industry approach to content creation and distribution.

Further alignment in:

  • Technical recommendations to support evolving content pipelines
  • Consumer education on how Ultra HD technologies impact viewing experiences
  • Best practices to ensure consistency across content production, distribution, and playback
