Ultra HD Forum to Announce 2024 Focus at NAB Show

Fremont, CA – April 8th, 2024 – As Ultra HD technologies become increasingly prevalent in television, the Ultra HD Forum diligently documents emerging delivery technologies to foster efficiencies, knowledge, and innovation that enhance Ultra HD services and create impactful experiences for viewers.

Two sessions will be hosted in the West Hall’s Connect Zone Theater to provide context on the future of the Ultra HD Forum. The events, which will be open to conference attendees at no cost, include:

  •  Yasser Syed, Comcast Distinguished Engineer and new President of the Ultra HD Forum, will lead a one-hour Town Hall meeting at 11:45 on Sunday, April 14th, on the Forum’s mission and 2024 focus areas, where Forum members and past presidents will also take part.
  • Yuriy Reznik, VP of Research at Brightcove and active Ultra HD Forum members will lead a half-hour panel discussion at 4 pm on Tuesday, April 16th, exploring Ultra HD’s expansion to screens across all device categories. He will be joined by panelists from Dolby, Fairmile West, and Qualcomm to discuss what we should do to prepare for a UHD-everywhere world.

In 2024, besides pursuing ongoing endeavors such as Sustainability and Single-Master Workflows, the Forum is exploring the following topics for investigation:

  1. Enhancing the Quality of Ultra HD Experiences, including still images and graphics with better color, Next-Gen Audio, improved frame rates, and identifying where to exploit Ultra HD’s capabilities for viewer engagement.
  2. AI Integration will harness machine learning and other tools to augment Ultra HD technology, paving the way for smarter, more adaptive video solutions.
  3. Personalized Ultra HD by tailoring content for diverse audiences and individual preferences.
  4. Network Innovations to tackle bandwidth demands on hybrid networks, including OTT delivery, to ensure robust and efficient content distribution.
  5. Automate content management, innovate in identifying, signaling, and storing Ultra HD content, and optimize for the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
  6. Academic Alliances will start with San Francisco State University as part of the California State University Entertainment Alliance to contribute to bringing the latest research to market and cultivate the next generation of video engineers, embedding Ultra HD expertise at the educational core.

Updates to the Guidelines:

The updated Forum Guidelines, launched at NAB, now encompass new information about the use of HDR still images in UHD, updates to serial audio metadata standards and use cases, and revised definitions for Display Light, Display Referred, as well as Scene Light and Scene Referred image conversions.

In addition, we are developing a set of Executive Briefs that provide concise information on popular topics in UHD, including Video Codecs, Immersive Audio, and Single Master Workflow. The latter will be released at NAB.

Yasser Syed, new President of the Ultra HD Forum, said, “It’s exciting to be leading the organization, as Ultra HD is now mainstream while still evolving in many exciting areas as it permeates all screens. I’m excited that we’ll be extending our work from professional-only content production to prosumer and even user-generated content.”
